The Learning Center

The Learning Center (TLC) provides an individualized alternative education program as an extension of James Wood, Millbrook and Sherando high schools. Course content is based on Frederick County Public School's High School Curriculum, and is consistent with current Standards of Learning for those courses.

At TLC, we are committed to helping students maximize their chances for academic success by providing smaller classes, individualized instruction and a variety of scheduling options. Course content at TLC is designed to help students master the Virginia Standards of Learning.

Students may be recommended for TLC by parents, teachers, students or guidance counselors. Recommendation is made through the home school guidance department. No student is placed at TLC involuntarily.

Students come to TLC either in the morning or the afternoon. Both morning and afternoon students may take up to four classes per academic year at TLC. Classes are held on a Day 1/Day 2 alternating schedule, similar to the students' home high schools. Students can complete up to two classes per semester.
A shuttle bus is provided daily to bring students to TLC and take them back to their high school. Students may not drive to TLC without special permission.

We believe that good attendance is essential to success in the classroom. Students who are absent from class are required to make up time missed.  Make-up time is generally scheduled with the teacher. The FCPS tardy policy is also enforced at TLC. Parents are asked to call TLC if a student is going to be absent in the morning before 8:30 a.m.

While at TLC, eligible students may also be enrolled in vocational programs at Dowell J. Howard Center.
